Overview
Threema is an instant messenger for text, voice and video calls, group chats, file transfer and polls. Users are identified by a random Threema ID; linking a phone number or email address is optional. Messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted. Desktop and web clients are available in addition to the iOS and Android apps.
The app is paid once per platform, with no subscription; licences cannot be transferred between app stores. The client apps have been open source under the AGPL-3.0 since 2020, while the server is proprietary. An F-Droid build without proprietary components (Threema Libre) is available for Android.
Threema operates its own servers in colocation data centres in the Zurich area. Threema AG has been owned by German investment firm Comitis Capital since early 2026, after Afinum held a majority stake from 2020.
