Overview
Exoscale is an infrastructure-as-a-service cloud operated by Akenes SA in Lausanne. It offers virtual machines (including GPU instances), block storage, S3-compatible object storage (SOS), the Scalable Kubernetes Service (SKS) and managed databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Kafka, OpenSearch and Valkey. The managed database service is powered by Finnish provider Aiven. Resources can be managed through a web portal, API, CLI and Terraform, and are billed by usage in CHF, EUR or USD.
The platform runs in eight zones: Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland, two in Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich, Sofia and Zagreb. Customers choose the zone for each resource, so data stays in Switzerland only if Swiss zones are selected. Both Swiss zones are hosted in Equinix data centres.
Exoscale was founded in Switzerland in 2011. Since 2017 it has been majority-owned by A1 Digital, part of the Vienna-listed A1 Telekom Austria Group, whose majority shareholder is Mexico’s América Móvil. The operator lists ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 certifications, a BSI C5 attestation and a SOC 2 report.
